Reader's Choice - How to Include Contract/Temporary Work on a Resume

I’ve been working as a Contractor for over 10 years now, and although I have very few gaps in employment, I do look like a job-hopper because of all of the different positions that I’ve had.  How can I write my resume so that my history doesn’t make me look inconsistent or unreliable?

It’s very true that the conditions of today’s economy are increasing our numbers of precarious workers in Canada.  Although this type of work is very common and much more recognized by employers and hiring managers, it can present a challenge when one is trying to gain position in the job search marketplace.  Rest assured that I would not categorize you as a “job-hopper” because you have a steady employment history.  It just happens to be with a higher amount of employment location records.  Your focus needs to be on streamlining your information to make the best impact!


Here are some tips:


If you have done multiple jobs through one specific agency/employer, even if there is a time lapse in between, use that employer’s name as the title of the employment record and then list all jobs with that employer underneath rather than giving them all their own employment record. 


For example: 


George’s Contracting Ltd.                                                        2009 – Present
General Foreman (Mar 2015 – Present)
Site Supervisor (Dec 2011 – June 2012)
Contractor (May 2009 – Sept 2010)

Pete’s Boathouse Contracting                                                 Sept 2012 – Jan 2015
General Foreman

Home Depot of Canada                                                           Sept 2010 – Dec 2011
Construction Maintenance (New Build)


If you were doing time-limited contracts, it’s always a good idea to list that on your resume.  This gives the hiring manager/recruiter an idea of how long each contract was and if you fulfilled your requirements there, which is a sign of commitment to the task.

 

For example:

George’s Contracting Ltd.
Site Supervisor – 18 month contract (Dec 2011 – June 2012)


If you fulfilled a contract and were asked to stay on longer, that is definitely something to include in your resume.  It shows that you were the type of person that they needed, and when they had to extend their project, they saw the value in keeping you on, rather than hiring someone new.

 

For example:

George’s Contracting Ltd.
Site Supervisor – 12 month contract extended to 18 months   (Dec 2011 – June 2012)


You still want to make your resume very accomplishment-rich rather than duty-based!  So under each employment entry, give 2-3 brief achievements from each position that you held.
